Could the U.S. end up like Greece?

Over the past month, we have watched from the downfalls as Greece has plunged into a debt crisis. Mounting pressure from global financial markets forced Greece to begin a drastic austerity program. With a fiscal deficit of 8.1 percent of GDP and government debt of 115 percent of GDP expected this year, Greece has promised to turn itself around by 2013. The European Union and the International Monetary Fund have announced an extraordinary $1 trillion package to support the plan, and the European Central Bank has announced its own extraordinary measures. We should not be as in a bad shape as the economy because the United States is the largest single economy. So we know for a fact that we will not have a downfall like Greece in our current stage.

Grains, oil and most metals continue to fall as investors seek safety of the dollar

A broad sell-off in the commodities market continued Monday as a stronger dollar pulled down the price of grains, oil and some metals. The euro, used by 16 countries in Europe, fell to a four-year low against the dollar early Monday, growing worries about Europe’s economic health. The euro later recovered, but not until after the commodities markets had closed. Investors are trying to predict whether planned budget cuts in countries like Greece, Spain and Portugal will be helped in the economic recovery in Europe as well as the U.S. Weak economies would hurt demand for commodities. I hope that the people in these countries are helped and so that they are improved well.

IMF approves $40B loan for Greece

The International Monetary Fund on Sunday approved a 30 billion euro ($38.6 billion) loan for Greece as part of a larger European Union-led effort to help ease the country’s economic crisis. The three-year deal makes about 5.5 billion euros (US $7 billion) immediately available to Greece’s horrible economy, the IMF said in a statement announcing the loan. The approval comes a week after Greece accepted an international aid package — negotiated by the IMF, European Central Bank and European Commission — worth 110 billion euros (US $141 billion). This improvement will help Greece out if its economy and other European country. I hope that this loan will help Greece.

Dollar gains on Greek bailout; US data shows improvements in manufacturing, consumer spending

The dollar climbed Monday as markets digested a bailout for Greece and economic reports showed broad improvements in the U.S. economy. The euro fell to $1.3212 in late New York trading from $1.3308 late Friday.European governments and the International Monetary Fund have committed to help Greece with 110 billion euros, or $145 billion, in emergency loans. The money is aimed at keeping Greece from defaulting on its debts and preventing its financial crisis from infecting other indebted countries as Europe struggles out of recession. This was a development of trying to put the people in Greece to get back on their feet. I hope the government of Greece uses this money very wisely.

Hong Kong police make largest drug bust, seize cocaine sent in botched shipment 4-26-10

In their largest haul ever, police in Hong Kong have seized 820 pounds (372 kilograms) of cocaine from a suburban house that was reportedly part of a botched drug shipment sent to the southern Chinese territory by mistake. Officers had found a stash of cocaine which has a street value of 337 million Hong Kong dollars ($43.4 million). The cocaine was stored in 26 boxes on the roof of the three-story village house. The huge stash was the subject of negotiations between the missing person suspected Dutch-Chinese dealer Chang Ma-ki and Hong Kong dealers after it was mistakenly shipped to the territory, the Post reported, citing Ted Tsang, the acting chief superintendent of the Hong Kong police’s narcotics bureau. I am glad that those who are trying to sell drugs were caught and lost a lot of money.

China quake death toll climbs above 2,000

The death toll from last week’s 6.9-magnitude earthquake in northwest China has risen to 2,039, state media said late Monday. Another 195 people are still missing. It added that 12,135 people were injured, of whom 1,434 were in serious condition. Since the quake struck the country’s Tibetan region, rescuers have been working round the clock to find survivors and pull them from the rubble. The earthquake caused 15,000 house to topple down which leaves many families homeless. It was was greatly destroyed that more than 100,000 people were to flee the area. Since there is different ethnic groups, they had different magnitudes but the Tibetans had the 6.9 magnitude. I hope the people get their houses and they are provided with money.

U.S. to urge Russia to keep adoptions after boy’s return

Top officials from the U.S. State Department plan to travel to Moscow this week to push Russia to allow adoptions by U.S. families to continue. The trip comes after a U.S. family sparked outrage by sending an adopted 7-year-old boy back to Russia alone. Officials in Moscow have threatened to halt all adoptions by U.S. families. Families in the United States have adopted 14,079 children from Russia in the last five years, including 1,586 in 2009, according to the State department. The family that returned the boy said he showed violent and psychotic behavior — and that officials in Russia had given no warning. “I am sorry to say that for the safety of my family, friends and myself I no longer wish to parent this child,” Torry Hansen wrote in a note in the child’s backpack. She added that Russian orphanage workers “lied to and misled” her about the boy, Artyem, who was renamed Justin Artyem when the family adopted him last year. In a phone call with CNN, Hansen’s mother, Nancy Hansen, said the boy “had a hit list of people he wanted to hurt.” No. 1 on that list: his American mom. The final straw, the adoptive grandmother said, came last week when the family caught him trying to start a fire in the home.

153 trapped in China coal mine

In Beijing, China, 153 people were trapped under a coal mine while the coal mine was flooded. Mine workers became trapped in the Wangjialing coal mine in China’s Shanxi Province on Sunday when underground water gushed into the mine, the official Xinhua news agency reported, citing the provincial work safety supervision administration. More than at least one hundred(100) coal miners were saved from death. The cause of the unnoticed flood was not know how it came. Officials originally estimated that 152 people were trapped inside, then revised that number to 123. But late Sunday, officials revised the number again to 153, Xinhua said. I hope that the people who were flooded and survived are safe and nothing random like this will happen again.

Google quits censoring search in China (March 22)

On Monday, March 22, Google announced that it has stopped censoring search results in China. The announcement came in amazement that the search giant would pull out of China entirely and sets up a showdown with the Communist leadership there. “We want as many people in the world as possible to have access to our services, including users in mainland China, yet the Chinese government has been crystal clear throughout our discussions that self-censorship is a non-negotiable legal requirement,” said Senior Vice President David Drummond, Google’s chief legal officer, on their blog. They hope that the people in China will have access to Google as soon the government runs down. Early reports from China on Monday suggested that the Chinese government was already restricting access to Google’s Hong Kong-based site, said Eddan Katz, International Affairs Director of the Electronic Frontier Foundation. They have also heard about pages not found to users. China will hopefully regain the privilege to Google.

Bus plunges off bridge in India, kills 26

On Monday in New Delhi,India, a bus plunged off a bridge in where it killed at least 28 passengers and also injuring 32 passengers in the terrifying ride said the police. The bus the wreck happened before dawn in the in the Swai Madhopur district of Rajasthan state where the bus crashed into a parked vehicle and smashed through the span’s railing where the bus fell to their eyes of living or death. Most of the passengers were of the age of 20-25, students that were probably going to school. The injured passengers were hospitalized so they recognized that God was there with them in the time. I hope that all the people who are in the hospital from the bus crash get better.
